Begin routine mowing in spring when grass starts turning green using a mower with properly sharpened blades for both types of turf. Mowers should be set at 1 inch to 2 inches for Common Bermudagrass and ½ inch to 1½ inch for any hybrid varieties. Where as, St. Augustine grass should have mowers set at 3½ to 3¾ inches, adding an additional ½ inch in shady areas when possible. No more than one-third of the leaf area on either type of grass should be removed during any one mowing to allow for the best quality lawn possible.
Mulching clippings is recommended rather than bagging and removing them. Clippings decompose quickly and return necessary nutrients back into the soil.
