Summer Reminders for Southeast Texas Lawns

  • Until temperatures cool back down and consistently stay below 90 degrees, lawns cannot be blanketed with herbicides; there will be spot treatments only.
  • Follow summer watering guidelines; 1-2 inches of water should be applied to the lawn stemming from a combination of natural rainfall and manual irrigation. Water deeply and less frequently and during morning hours.
  • Keep on the lookout for destructive summer pests, i.e. armyworms, chinch bugs and sod webworms (see June 2020 newsletter). Report any pest activity to the office staff at BHL.
  • Excess rain and watering during summer heat, combined with improper mowing practices can lead to the formation of fungus (see “Common Lawn Diseases” in the blog). Keep mower blades sharpened and continue to mow at recommended heights for your turf type (see “Importance of Proper Mowing” blog).
  • Call the BHL office and inform them of any issues seen on your summer lawn. The technicians will address the problem areas in a timely manner.
